This page shows an interactive Timeline of Islamist (ISIS and al-Qaida) terrorist attacks around the world. ISIS and al-Qaida attacks in active warzones, (Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, etc.) are not included. Where applicable, information on the origins and allegiance of the terrorist attackers is provided, along with casualty information.
From the nightclub shooting in Istanbul, Turkey on New Year's Eve to the not-very-well-done pipe bomb explosion in New York City, the world suffered through multiple terrorist attacks by Jihadist militants, most of whom swore allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS) or some version of al-Qaida. To keep these attacks in perspective, it is important to remember that they are part of a larger war waged against the Islamic State, al-Qaida, and other radical Islamist groups in Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia, the Philippines, and elsewhere, by a broad coalition of nations.
These attacks largely targeted civilians, from pre-teen concert goers at the Ariana Grande show in Manchester, to shoppers and holiday-goers run down by everyday vehicles in London, New York, Barcelona, to worshippers at houses of worship, both Christian and Muslim, in Egypt. These terrorist groups, defeated on the battlefields of Syria, Iraq, and Libya, look for targets of opportunity in the still-open societies of Western nations.
Examining this timeline, you will notice that several attacks took part in Muslim or Muslim-majority nations such as Egypt, Iran, and Bangladesh. Jihadist terror groups seek to kill or drive out non-Sunni Muslims and other groups they see as "infidels," such as the Sufi sect in Egypt's Sinai or their Shiite foes in Iran. Secular governments in Muslim nations such as Bangladesh and Egypt also are targeted.
