History
The Rose Bowl
Below is information on the 21st Century history
of the Rose Bowl, begun in 1902 and held in Pasedena,
California. The first Rose Bowl, held in 1902 as an
add-on to the Rose Parade, was the first ever post-season
college football game, and, hence, the very first Bowl
Game.
The Rose Bowl traditionally features the matchup
between the champions of the Pac-10 and Big-10
Conferences, but since--- the Rose Bowl alternates
hosting the National Championship game under the rules of
the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). The Rose Bowl hosted
the National Championship game in 2002 and 2005.
2001 Rose Bowl: Washington Huskies vs. Purdue
Boilermakers.
Played on Jan. 1, 2001, with the Washington
Huskies defeating the the Purdue Boilermakers, by a
score of 34 to 24.
2002 Rose Bowl: Miami (Florida) Hurricanes vs.
Nebraska Cornhuskers
Played on Jan. 3, 2002, with the Miami
(Florida) Hurricanes defeating the Nebraska
Cornhuskers by a score of 37 to 14. This was the first
National Championship Rose Bowl game under the new BCS
rules.
2003 Rose Bowl: Oklahama Sooners vs. Washington
State Cougars
Played on Jan. 1, 2003, with the Oklahama
Sooners defeating the Washington State Cougars by a
score of 34 to 14.
2004 Rose Bowl: Southern California Trojans vs.
Michigan Wolverines
Played on Jan. 1, 2005, Southern California
Trojans defeating the Michigan Wolverines by a score
of 28 to 14.
2005 Rose Bowl: Texas Longhorns vs. Michigan
Wolverines
Played on Jan. 1, 2005, Texas Longhorns
defeating the Michigan Wolverines by a score of 38 to
37. Because of the BCS rankings and rules, the Rose
Bowl was given an at-large pick for the game, and
chose Texas over California, the PAC-10 school which
expected to be invited.
2006 Rose Bowl: Texas Longhorns vs. Southern
California Trojans
Played on Jan. 4, 2006, with the Texas
Longhorns defeating the Southern California Trojans by
a score of 41 to 38. This was the second National
Championship Rose Bowl game under the new BCS rules.
2007 Rose Bowl: Southern California Trojans vs.
Michigan Wolverines
Played on Jan. 1, 2007, with the Southern
California Trojans defeating the Michigan Wolverines
by a score of 32 to 18.
2008 Rose Bowl: Southern California Trojans vs.
Illinois Fighting Illini
Played on Jan. 1, 2008, with the Southern
California Trojans defeating the Illinois Fighting
Illini by a score of 49 to 17.
2009 Rose Bowl: Southern California Trojans vs.
Penn State Nittany Lions
Played on Jan. 1, 2009, with the Southern
California Trojans defeating the Penn State Nittany
Lions by a score of 38 to 24.
2010 Rose Bowl: Oregon Ducks vs. Ohio State
Buckeyes
Played on Jan. 1, 2010, the Ohio State
Buckeyes defeated the Oregon Ducks by a score of 26 to
17.
2011 Rose Bowl: Wisconsin Badgers vs. Texas
Christian Horned Toads
Played on Jan. 1, 2011, the Wisconsin Badgers lost to
the Texas Christian Horned Toads by a score of 21 to
19.
