President
Hosni Mubarak Muhammad Hosni Sayyid Mubarak

(b. May 4, 1928 in Kafr-El-Meselha,
Monufia Governorate, Egypt ) Hosni Mubarak currently serves as
the President of the Arab Republic of
Egypt. He was appointed Vice-President
in 1975 by President Anwar el-Sadat,
and became the President . of Egypt on
October 14, 1981, following the
assassination of President Anwar
el-SadatMubarak is is the
longest-serving Egyptian leader since
Muhammad Ali Pasha in the 1800s. Prior
to entering politics, Mubarak was a
career officer in the Egyptian Air
Force, serving as the Air Force's
commander from 1972 to 1975. Despite being re-elected to the
office of the Presidency four times
since he gained power after Sadat's
assassination, Mubarak is a strongman
who rules without the usual checks and
balances found in a real democracy. His
security forces regularly jail
political opponents, limit media
freedom, and freedom of speech, and
regularly outlaw various political
parties oppossed to the Mubarak regime.
It is widely considered that Hosni
Mubarak is grooming his son, Gamel
Mubarak, to succeed him as president.
Hosni Mubarak is currently (in 2011) 82
years old, and his power is being
strongly contested by anti-government
protests in January of 2011. On February 11, 2011, after 18 days
of protests and riots, President Hosni
Mubarak turned power over to the
Egyptian military, and left Cairo for
Sharm el-Sheik, a resort town on the
Sinai Peninsula where Mubarak owned
property. In mid-April, Mubarak was in
the hospital with what was described as
a heart condition. The next day,
former-President Mubarak and his two
sons were "detained" by authorities
pending an investigation into charges
of corruption and involvement in the
deaths of protesters during the
uprising. "The
