January 2010 Deaths:

Gary "Tex" Brockette (September 13, 1947–January 1, 2010) -an American character actor, an assistant director, a writer and a co-producer. Died of Cancer in Los Angeles, California.

Paula Sladewski--26, American Playboy model found murdered.

Casey Johnson (September 24, 1979 – January 4, 2010) American socialite, Johnson & Johnson heiress. She was 30 years old at the time of her death.

Bob Blackburn (1924 – January 8, 2010) -American sports commentator for the now defunct Seattle SuperSonics NBA basketball team. Blackburn was 85 years old when he died of pneumonia.

Masoud Alimohammadi (c. 1960 – 12 January 2010) --Iranian physicist believed to work on Iran's Nuclear Weapons Program. Assassinated on the morning of January 12, 2010 in front of his home in Tehran by a hidden bomb.

Hillis Layne (February 23, 1918 – January 12, 2010), nicknamed Tony, was an American third baseman in Major League Baseball for three seasons with the Washington Senators between 1941 and 1945.

Teddy Pendergrass (March 26, 1950– January 13, 2010) -American singer who was paralyzed in an auto accident in 1982. Pendergrass was 59 years old, and died of complications related to colon cancer.

Edmund Leonard (Ed) Thigpen (December 28, 1930– January 13, 2010)--Jazz drummer best known for his work with Oscar Peterson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billy Taylor, among others.

Erich Segal (June 16, 1937 –January 17, 2010) --An American professor, the author of the novel Love Story, and the screenwriter of the Beatles' animated film, Yellow Submarine. He was 72 years old when he died of a heart attack.

Gaines Adams (June 8, 1983 – January 17, 2010) Professional football player for the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League, Adams was 26 years old when he died of cardiac arrest.

Jennifer Lyn Jackson (March 21, 1969 – January 22, 2010) --An American Playboy model who died of a drug overdose at the age of 40.

Robert Mosbacher (March 11, 1927 – January 24, 2010) --American politician and the Secretary of Commerce in the first Bush Administration from 1989 to1992 who died at age 82 of pancreatic cancer.

J. D. Salinger (January 1, 1919 – January 27, 2010) --the American author best known as the writer of The Catcher in the Rye, died at age 91 of natural causes.

Howard Zinn (August 24, 1922 – January 27, 2010) --an American historian,civil rights and antiwar activist and political scientist best known for his book, A People's History of the United States. Zinn died at age 87 of a heart attack.

 

April 2010 Deaths

Malcolm McLaren (January 22,1946 – April 8, 2010)-- British musician and band manager (Sex Pistols, New York Dolls, Bow Wow Wow). Died of mesothelioma at the age of 64.

Meinhardt Raabe (September 2, 1915 – April 9, 2010)-- American actor (The Wizard of Oz), heart attack at the age of 90.

Lech Kaczynski (June 18, 1949 – April 10, 2010) --President of Poland. Died in a plane crash at age 80.

Anna Walentynowicz: Polish Worker's Hero (August 13, 1929 - April 10, 2010) -Polish Worker's activist who played an important role in the Solidarity movement. Died in a plane crash at age 60.

Dixie Carter (May 25, 1939 – April 10, 2010), American actress (Designing Women, Diff'rent Strokes).

Benjamin Lawson Hooks (January 31, 1925 – April 15, 2010) --American civil rights leader, Baptist minister and practicing attorney. Hooks served as executive director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1977 to 1992.

Daryl Gates (August 30, 1926 – April 16, 2010) -- Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from 1978 to 1992.

Juan Antonio Samaranch Torelló ( July 17, 1920 – April 21, 2010) --Spanish sports official who served as the seventh President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1980 to 2001. Died at age 70.

 

May 2010 Deaths

Lynn Rachel Redgrave (March 8, 1943 – May 2, 2010) --An English actress and member of the Redgrave family of British actors. Lynn Redgrave appeared in the films, Tom Jones (1963), and Georgy Girl (1966).

William Earnest "Ernie" Harwell (January 25, 1918 – May 4, 2010) Play-by-play broadcaster for the Detroit Tigers for 42 years. In January 2009, the American Sportscasters Association ranked Harwell 16th on its list of Top 50 Sportscasters of All Time.

Robin Evan Roberts (September 30, 1926 – May 6, 2010) --Baseball player who pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies (1948–61), the Baltimore Orioles (1962–65), Houston Astros (1965–66), and Chicago Cubs (1966). He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1976.

Walter J. Hickel (August 18, 1919 – May 7, 2010)-Two-time Former Alaska Governor and United States Secretary of the Interior.

Lena Horne (June 30, 1917 – May 9, 2010) -American singer, dancer, actress and civil rights activist. Died at age 92.

Frank Frazetta (February 9, 1928 – May 10, 2010) --American fantasy and science fiction artist.

Phyllis Hodges Boyce (July 24, 1936 – May 12, 2010) --American actress, appearing in movies and television serials. She was often credited as Phyllis Douglas. She played in the movie Gone with the Wind, and in The Original Star Trek series.

Ronnie James Dio (July 10, 1942 – May 16, 2010) -- American heavy metal singer and songwriter. Dio performed with Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, and his eponymous band Dio. He died of stomach cancer at the age of 67.

 

December 2010 Deaths

Elizabeth Edwards (July 3, 1949 – December 7, 2010)--Author and wife of Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidate John Edwards

Richard Holbrooke (April 24, 1941 – December 13, 2010) --American diplomat, age 69.
